Brendon Orr (00:00) This is Brendon Orr and you're listening to My Mindful Moment, Podmasana's sibling podcast featuring listener submitted moments of mindfulness. In this episode, Dr. Vijay P Jayade shares his mindful moment regarding a poem that inspired his own meditation practice. Vijay P. Jayade (00:22) I came across a poem composed by Sri Swami Swarupanandaji, a well-known saint from Maharashtra who lived in the last century. The poem lists the steps in the meditation. Roughly translated, it says, you should practice meditation without being afraid of the obstacles. Try to concentrate on the famous quote from the scriptures, Soham, meaning, I am he, and make an effort to unite with yourself, also known as Atman. Endeavor. to clean the mind of its impurities. Consider in a detached manner how various thoughts arise in the mind. Submit your senses, mind, intellect and conscience to the Supreme and feel the peace. Remember that your every action and experience of joy and grief are under the control of the Supreme. When you try to unite the sentience within you with that in the universe, you will experience the sublime joy. Remember that every function of your organs like eyes, ears, nose, etc. are controlled by the Self. Try to unify the person within you with that Self, keeping the focus on the Self all the time and will give you its knowledge and liberate you. Reading the poem inspired me to start the practice of meditation following the directions in the above poem. However, I needed to know what constitutes the Self. I got the answer to the question from Shri Jnaneshwari, the immortal commentary on the Bhagavad Gita written by Shri Jnaneshwar Maharaj in the 13th century. He defined the Self I the uninterrupted sublime joy. I thought that this must be the most subtle and intense form of joy. I meditate keeping my focus on the consecutive thoughts in the poem. I also ponder on the relationship between the self and the Brahman. Towards the end of my meditation, I try to mentally merge myself with the self and concentrate on experiencing the bliss. When I experience it, that is my moment of mindfulness. Brendon Orr (03:12) That was Dr. Vijay Jayade's mindful moment. What's yours? You can email your mindful moment recording to mymindfulmoment at podmasana.com. Feel free to include a photo of yourself that you would like to include with your mindful moment.
